Project Description

Coffman Specialties, Inc was awarded a $36.3 million contract to construct the Mesquite Regional Landfill (MRL) rail spur and intermodal yard.  This project includes the construction of a 100-acre intermodal rail facility at the MRL and an approximate 5-mile rail spur to connect with the Union Pacific Railroad main line about 1-mile west of Glamis.  Construction of these facilities began in the spring of 2010 and was complete in late 2011.

Construction is also underway on the Puente Hills Intermodal Facility (PHIMF) in Los Angeles County, where sorted trash will be loaded onto trains for the 200-mile trip to the Mesquite Regional Landfill.  The project is expected to be complete by mid 2012.

Once these facilities are constructed and operational, containerized trash can arrive by train for disposal at the landfill. Similar to what is commonly seen at seaports, the containers will be moved by crane from the trucks onto a train for delivery.  A similar process at the MRL will move the containerized trash from rail cars onto trucks for disposal in the landfill.
